Setting the Table with a New Dining Room | Part 1

For generations, the dining room has been the place where families can come together to share their life’s experiences over a meal, thus strengthening their family bond. In fact, many families have been known to pass down their dining room furniture from one generation to the next, keeping their family traditions alive. So whether you’re adding to an existing family heirloom, or starting your own traditions with your new family, there are a few important items to consider before setting the table.

There are so many things to consider when it comes time to designing a Dining Room space, so take your time and think it through. This short series on Setting the Table with a New Dining Room will give you some things to think about, including size, shape, style, finish and time frame. Are you hosting a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner for the entire family or is this new breakfast nook that will be used every day? Do you need the table to expand with the occasion or stay the same day-to-day? Do you need a place to store formal dinnerware or serve multiple courses from or do you need a pub-height table for a casual adult experience?

At Mor Furniture for Less, we are the furniture experts, with hundreds of rooms in all shapes and styles for you to choose from. We hope that this series will help you to decide what kind of dining room fits your home so that we can help you find the perfect dining room to fit your dream. Setting the Table with a New Dining Room | Part 2 - Size & Shape

SIZE & SHAPE

Before starting any decorating project, it is important to determine the size of the room that you are working with by taking accurate measurements. The overall size of your room will likely determine the size of the dining table you purchase. If you are working with a large formal dining area it is important to select dining furniture that is sizable enough to fill your large area. Placing a petite table for two in a vast dining room will only swallow up your new furniture. On the other hand if you are looking for a table to fit into your kitchen’s breakfast nook, purchasing a grand dining room set that seats eight and has a large buffet and hutch might not be the best choice. Size of furniture is essential when designing your living areas, so choose wisely.

Once you have ventured out in search of a new dining room set you will find that there are a few shapes to consider. The most common shape is the rectangle, but there are also round, square, and oval shapes from which to choose. If you would like to create a social atmosphere that is conducive to conversation, you might want to consider a round table. Round tables work great for small families or parties, and some even offer extra leaves to extend the table on those special occasions that call for extra seating. If you host frequent dinner parties a rectangle table with multiple leaves would probably work best for you. Even if you only have guests over a couple days out of the year, rectangle tables give you the flexibility to expand for guests when needed but downsize for everyday dining. Square tables, frequently referred to as gathering tables, often come in counter top or bar heights and are becoming very popular. This appetizing new style works great in homes with a contemporary flare and are often used as game tables. Whatever shape you choose try to aim for furniture that will satisfy your taste for life.
